The Little Things

Guys, I am wrapping my final week as a stay at home Mom. I am retuning to work on Monday for only a few days a week and I feel so weird. I am not ready for this new chapter but again what woman is?! I will just have to figure everything out as we go along. But let’s focus on the weekend first. My mother is visiting and as it happens this weekend Zurich has another edition of the Street Food Festival. So I guess you know where we will be.

Here are some pictures from this past week. It’s all about the little things. Have a fun and relaxing weekend!

You know it is Spring when peonies are everywhere.

The best roast beef sandwich in Zurich can be found in front of Globus on Bahnhofstrasse. I absolutely love it.

Seasonal activities

I am in love with fall especially since this year it’s filled with a lot of emotions and love. Our baby boy is due in November and until this year I was never a big fan of this month since the weather gets so grey and the days become so short. But now with a child on our way, I can’t wait to experience the new seasons. I am sure it will bring us a whole new perspective on everything. Like pumpkin season that is now in full bloom. We love the local farms in our area and we try to stop by every weekend. It is a good opportunity to spend a few hours in the fresh air while sipping your coffee and eating a piece of seasonal cake (plum tart is especially delicious this year) and also stock up on fresh farm vegetables and fruits. It reminds me so much of my childhood and home and it brings me extra joy to know that next year in Spring we will see the orchards bloom with our baby in our arms.

In the Zurich area I recommend the Jucker farms, they are a great place for families and not only. You can take a walk around the lake and just admire the view.

How to grow tomatoes?

DSC_3282

Well this is not a topic I thought I would be writing a few years ago, but it turns out that my little experiment of growing tomatoes on our terrace this summer, turned out very well. I got the seeds in May from my Mum and beginning of June I was planting them in small pots and watering them every day. In a month time, I had these small plants that were ready to be transferred into bigger pots so that they could grow more and more. So I did it, and by August, the flowers on my tomatoes plants were turning into tomatoes. It was great to observe everything this summer, and take care of them. The only thing is that I planted them too late and since the sun in Switzerland is sometimes very shy, it takes quite long for the tomatoes to become ripe. It’s October now and we already sampled 3 tomatoes from our harvest :). There are still a few in the making especially if the weather stays warm. I am incredibly happy with the result, especially since the taste of organic grown tomatoes is so wonderful. It is such a difference from the ones we buy in the supermarket even from the so called BIO ones. The perfume they have, the taste it’s all worth it and the amount of work that goes into growing them is so little. All we did was to make sure we water them and keep them in a sunny and covered place so that the rain can’t touch them. I can honestly say that once you taste a tomato like this, you will feel very disappointed by the ones you buy in the stores.

So my dear ones know that next year I plan on planting tomatoes early in March, hoping for a more productive harvest so that I can have the best tomatoes all summer. I love this and hopefully one day I can have a proper small garden where I can grown my own vegetables. That would be so wonderful.

The sequel of events in pictures below: June to October 2014.

Let it be fall

Did I tell you that we had a winter scare last weekend? We had the first snow in Switzerland and you can guess I was less than thrilled. But luckily for us it was just a few days and now we are back to warmer days. And you have to love autumn and all its colors! It is just amazing how beautiful everything gets. I had my parents here for a week and we walked quite a lot in the area where we live. I took a few snapshots with my phone that I hope you will enjoy.

Happy fall weekend!

Life in the country side

Where we live now, in Bassesdorf we are basically in a small town that is in the country side. I couldn’t be more happy with this, because I got so fed up with living in Bucharest, that being away from the city is just what we needed. We refuse the possibility of moving to Zurich, that is a 15 minutes train ride from our place, because the peace and quiet of the countryside is just what we need. And I should not forget to mention the beautiful landscapes and the forest, that are the best excuse to go on long walks and bike rides. In one of our last biking expeditions we ended up discovering a horse farm. This reminded me of the time we went horse riding last year.

Pieces of everyday life

all going to be about Vintage

My roommates cat, Mitzi. She is a cutie and she is not afraid of the cold.
I would love to have her energies 🙂

Hello Cupcake! Again LV has the best window display.
I want a cupcake 🙂

Carrot cake, made last weekend. I got the recipe from a colleague
that in his young years was a chef and it is just the best carrot cake one can make.

On Friday I had my first hairdresser appointment in Switzerland and it was great.
Caroline, my new stylist did a great job in changing my color.

Today’s Breakfast – tortilla with poached eggs, tomatoes, ham and
goat cheese.

As you might have noticed my posting has been more of a weekly thing lately. I can’t say I like it but I am having a bit of a hard time managing my time. And I always feel like I should do something else instead of what I am actually doing. Not a great feeling but I blame it on the weather. Winter –  not my best friend, because of the cold, of the lack of sun and the rain/snow makes me just want to stay indoors and hibernate. I so envy people that have the sun and the warm weather all year long. Nevertheless, have a great week!

Perfect Sunday

You know the perfect Sunday? It’s the Sunday when you get to sleep late, after a Saturday night out, when you have pancakes for breakfast and your coffee tastes so good. This is how our day started and we couldn’t have continued it better then with a bike ride through Zurich. We strolled by the lake up until the central park. The autumn colors were amazing, the view was to die for and everyone was just enjoying the beautiful day. Our ride ended with a late lunch in the best coffee place I know so far (I still love Starbucks but this place is so cozy that you could spend all your days there).  I’m talking about Babu’s Bakery and Coffee House, (even the name is homey), located near the city center. The place is great, from the food and coffee, to the design. It reminds me of my grandmothers house because of the vintage furniture and table settings (see also this review here). It’s safe to say that me and Traian have found our Sunday go to place. It also goes perfectly with our tradition of taking our desert and coffee out. And here are some pieces of our perfect Sunday.

When you have pancakes in the morning, it must be a good day 🙂
I love the colors in this picture

Bike ride

Me and my bike
Yesterday it was suppose to be our movie night, but because we missed the movie and outside we had a great fall day, sunny, 17 degrees, we went for a bike ride. The place where we live, Kloten (the city with the Zurich airport ) has some great landscapes and lots of bike paths through the woods and the countryside. It’s a great way to exercise and people make the most of it, some with bikes, others running, rollerskating or simply walking. Traian and I did 19 km yesterday on our bikes and it was so refreshing. Here are some pics from our ride.

A walk in the city

My sister in law, Sabina, is in town for a visit and she is staying with us. So for a week I’ll be her guide through the city of  Zurich. It’s a really nice opportunity even for me to experience the city and to discover new places and new faces. Yesterday was our first day of rambling and I got some really nice pics.

She was taking a nap on Bahnhofstrasse, one of the most busy streets in the city. So the city has it’s calm 🙂

Internet junkie

Buna !

Si ziua continua cam in acelasi spirit, facand pauze pentru mancare, rasfoit o carte…
